Exotic Pet FAQ's
Our team at Veterinary Healthcare Center is able to provide routine care services such as preventive care and wellness exams for your bird or other exotic pet. Our team can also work with you to manage a variety of behavioral or medical concerns.
- Wellness & Preventive Care
As with all animals, exotic animals require routine care such as wellness exams and preventive care in order to ensure that they will live a long and healthy life. Our highly skilled vets are educated in the care and husbandry needs and veterinary treatment of these unique species.
When you bring your pet in for their first visit your vet will discuss their nutrition and general care along with housing needs. Your vet will recommend any needed diagnostic testing and discuss vaccines that your pet will need. This is a great opportunity to ask your vet any questions that you may have about the care of your pet. Your vet will make recommendations based on the specific needs of you and your pet.
- What happens at an exotic appointment?
When your pet comes in for their routine exam, your vet will perform an overall assessment of their health with a comprehensive physical examination. If your pet requires any preventive care this will be recommended at this time, you may ask any questions that you would like your vet to answer about the health and care of your pet.
- Emergencies & Urgent Care
Our team is able to manage urgent care situations involving birds and small animals. Please call (323) 890-9000 prior to arriving in order to determine the availability of our veterinarian. We accept daytime emergency and urgent care visits but may require an extra fee depending on the situation.
- What are exotic mammals?
Exotic mammals are small animals including rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, chinchillas, rats, mice, hamsters and gerbils. As most wild species of animals naturally hide any signs of discomfort or illness, it is even more important to ensure that you are routinely bringing them in for preventive care.
- What is the avian species?
The avian species include any and all species of animals related to birds. Birds have become a popular choice for a pet due to their intelligence and playfulness.
As with most exotic animals, birds will also hide any signs of illness therefore having your bird routinely examined by a qualified veterinary professional is incredibly important.
- What are reptiles?
Reptiles are air-breathing vertebrates. Their body is covered in a special skin made of bony plates, hard scales or a combination of both which they regularly shed to expose new skin as they grow. These can include iguanas, tortoises, lizards, turtles, snakes and more.
Reptiles can be quite delicate and their environment must be closely maintained. Preventive care is critical.
