Veterinary Healthcare Center is looking for a highly motivated and experienced License Veterinary Technician to join our management team as a Supervisor. This is a full-time position that includes working Saturday.
VHC (Veterinary Healthcare Center) is an AAHA accredited general practice that operates in a fast pace/high volume environment. We see more than your average general practice and operate outside of our normal business hours to provide exceptional access to care for patients. We have 6 Veterinarians so you are able to learn from a variety of techniques and knowledge. We are seeking an individual who likes to take a plunge in leading the veterinary assistant/technician department. As a working supervisor, you will be responsible for leading the Veterinary Assistant/Technician staff. Your supervisory duties will include, but are not limited to:

- Directing work flow and refining and implementing protocols
- Cultivating a positive, inclusive, respectful, and rewarding work environment
- Overseeing equipment maintenance
- Working cohesively with other leads and hospital manager to promote the hospital's mission and aiding in it's success.
- Helping with the interview process for potential new hires and training new team members
- Mentoring and assisting in the development of technicians and expanding their skill sets by creating opportunities for first hand experience
- Resolving conflicts in a professional manner
- Boosting staff morale
- Disputing client complaints and being able to professional handle during stress.
- Conducting monthly/quarterly department meeting to address continuous issues or training for new protocols
- Performing technician scheduling to maximize the benefits of the hospital needs
- Conducting employee evaluations and corrective actions where necessary
- Maintaining knowledge of veterinary medicine and AAHA standards
- OSHA compliance
- Prevent disease and infection through the proper administration of health examinations, vaccinations, diets and daily treatment and observation of the animals.
- Observe animals in our care for signs of illness or injury and report these to Veterinarian, and/or treat per agency protocols and acceptable industry practices.
- Segregate and isolate animals as necessary to prevent the spread of disease and infection.
- Prepare animals for treatment or surgery and assist veterinarian during treatment or surgery.
- Administer medications and/or treatment to animals as directed.
- Monitor food and water and monitor intake for animals under specialized veterinary care as directed by supervisor and as required by department protocol.
- Clean and disinfect animal enclosures under specialized veterinary care as directed by supervisor and as required by department protocol.
- Clean and maintain all veterinary department areas and equipment to ensure a sanitized and safe environment for staff and our animals.
- Performs and assists with humane euthanasia of animals according to AAHA policies and procedures.
- Record information on charts and in the database in an accurate and timely manner.
- Provide accurate and friendly service to the public and clients when advising them of the health of the animals or answering general questions.
- Maintain inventory of medications and supplies as required ensuring required amount of supplies are on hand and available. May order medication through appropriate vendors and processes invoices as required with the finance department.
- Observe the proper care and handling of animals, to ensure it is maintained by all staff to prevent the spread of infection and disease.
- Perform other duties, as necessary, to improve the functioning of the Veterinary Services Department and the Society as a whole.
- Treat diseases, injuries, and infections.
- Perform surgical procedures or euthanasia.
- Communicate with clients about treatment plans and options.
- Perform diagnostic testing on animals.
- Clean and sterilize medical instruments, equipment, and facilities to prevent infection.
- Appropriately dispose of biohazardous materials, such as body fluids or entrails.
Please note that these responsibilities are subject to change based on the evolving work needs of the hospital.
The ideal candidate will lead by example, creating a healthy work environment where staff feel encouraged to engage and learn from management.
Requirements:
- Minimum 4 years of experience providing exceptional patient care to small animals, including the ability to place IV catheters, draw blood, obtain x-rays, set up and monitor surgeries, etc.
- Ability to work effectively in a team setting.

Position Overview:
A working supervisor who performs the duties of medical technical staff (e.g., technicians and assistants) as well as scheduling and supervising the staff of the assigned department. Expedites the care and efficiency of the department. In charge of patient care standards for the department. Must lead the team by example, demonstrating organizational skills, following company policies, and maintaining a professional attitude.
Essential Functions:
- Supervise technicians and other medical personnel in the assigned department, evaluating performance (introductory and annual), reviewing time reporting, enforcing company policies, and communicating new practices and policies regarding technical duties; participate in the selection and discipline of staff.
- Schedule staff according to departmental needs, monitoring and regulating overtime hours worked by staff, ensuring proper coverage in times of shortage.
- Administer the on-call schedule as well as the standard schedule for staff.
- Train new staff in their responsibilities; mentor all staff regarding performance and training needs.
- Perform the duties of a technician or assistant, as scheduled.
- Liaison with other departments and supervisors regarding patient care and hospital operations; resolve issues, as needed.
- Oversee cleaning, stocking, and inventory duties for the department.
- Exhibit confidentiality and professionalism in all regards for employee issues; be proactive in the approach to issue resolution.
- Keep hospital management informed of any issues or risks that might impact operations or employee relations; work with the management team to resolve.

- Veterinary Technician Registration or equivalent experience.

Position Overview:
The Veterinary Technician supports hospital operations by providing dedicated quality veterinary care and exceptional service to our patients and clients. Responsibilities include providing patient care by determining animal requirements, conducting examinations and diagnostic procedures, assisting during surgery and operations, providing nursing care, assisting with feeding and caring for patients, maintaining medical supplies and equipment, overseeing triage and discharging patients, and maintaining patient medical records.
Essential Position Functions:
- Determine animal requirements by conducting examinations and interviews, reviewing care plans and records, completing laboratory tests and studies, and diagnostic imaging.
- Care for patients by taking vital signs, collecting samples, administering medications, drugs, and vaccines, and bandaging and wrapping wounds.
- Support patient examinations and operations by assembling required supplies and instruments, securing and bringing patients to examination rooms, and restraining patients; aids as directed by the veterinarian.
- Provide excellent pet care by applying full knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, specialized equipment usage, and specialized drug administration.
- Obtain and verify medications.
- Ensure that patients have food and water, clean patients' rooms, cages, and equipment; observe patients for clinical signs of disease.
- As directed, fill prescriptions and administer medications, including proper documentation, logging, and security of controlled drugs.
- Maintain a safe, secure, healthy, and humane environment by sterilizing and wrapping instruments, sanitizing and disinfecting holding and operating areas, storing sterile supplies, verifying shelf life, following standards and procedures, and in compliance with applicable legal regulations.
- Maintain medical records by documenting patients’ conditions, reactions, and changes; update the database in an accurate and timely manner.
- Communicate with the pet owner about the status of the patient, as directed by the veterinarian.
- Maintain equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining equipment supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and calling for repairs.
- Maintain inventory, place orders for needed supplies, verify, and maintain receipts.
- Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading professional journals.
- Release pets to their owners as directed; ensure that every animal released is clean and properly groomed before their release.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Manager or practice.

Dentistry
- Perform dental cleanings, polishing, and intraoral radiographs.
- Perform nerve blocks.
- Assist with dental procedures and oral surgery.
Dermatology
- Prepare and administer medications, intravenously, orally, and topically.
- Perform ear cleanings and minor flushes.
- Obtain skin scrapes and tape samples.
- Prepare skin and ear cytology.
- Induce and monitor anesthesia.
- Place intravenous catheters.
Emergency
- Assist veterinarians with a variety of emergency procedures and critical care situations.
- Monitor vitals, place catheters and take x-rays.
- Clean wounds and apply casts or bandages.
- Give injections and take blood samples.
- May have to be on call in the intensive care unit.
Imaging
- Assist veterinarians with a variety of diagnostic imaging modalities, including digital radiography, ultrasound, etc.
Integrative
- Maintain logs of pet diagnoses, treatments, and follow-up results so veterinarians can track responses to integrative care.
Internal Medicine
- Research general wellness and preventative medicine for patients.
Neurology
- Perform various technical procedures, including anesthesia support and monitoring, intravenous catheter placement, venipuncture, IV injections, wound management, drug administration assistance, bandage care, and surgery support.
Ophthalmology
- Assist veterinarians with ocular exams.
- Perform and/or assist with diagnostic testing (Schirmer Tear Testing, Tonometry, etc.).
Radiology
- Assist veterinarians with providing high-quality diagnostic imaging services to in-patient, out-patient, surgical, and emergency pets.
Surgery
- Provide extensive surgical assistance by preparing pets, scrubbing, shaving, acting as a surgical nurse, and operating specific surgical equipment and supplies.

Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Two or more years of experience with veterinary appointments, surgeries, and nursing care for hospitalized and critical patients.
- Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), or the Licensed Veterinary Medical Technician (LVMT) preferred or as required by State.
- May consider an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience.
Position Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
- Knowledge of the preparation, monitoring, and recovery of pets receiving surgery, as well as basic pet nursing.
- Ability to demonstrate and follow correct procedures in catheter placement, phlebotomy, emergency medicine, and digital radiology.
- Understand and limit the potential exposure to bites, scratches, and potential injuries.
- Able to restrain patients according to standard procedures.
- Fill prescriptions and monitor sedation procedures as directed by the veterinarian.
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
- Display confidence and reassurance when dealing with pets experiencing severe stress, illness, or pain.
- Communicate and approach job duties in a professional and mature manner.
- Must be flexible with scheduling and able to work some weekends and holidays.
- This is a strenuous job that requires a lot of lifting, cleaning, and constant motion.
- Depending on the functional area of assignment, tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation and/or extended periods of time standing and/or walking.
- May include some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
- Some tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting or carrying moderately heavy animals (up to 50 pounds).
- Answer phones and perform other duties as needed by the hospital.
